Debating History
This week started in a very memorable way for Chestnut and Sycamore Class: with a trip to London. After a long journey on the coach, there was huge excitement as we entered the city; children were spotting high rise buildings, football grounds and fascinating architecture. Then we arrived at the British Museum. Both classes were able to visit real-life artefacts related to their topics (Chestnut- the Sutton Hoo hoard and Sycamore- the Benin bronzes). It was incredible to be next to objects so steeped in history.
From the British Museum it was a short, but landmark-filled journey, across Trafalgar Square to the Palace of Westminster. After passing through security, having our bags scanned and hats removed, we began a tour of the Houses of Parliament. Again, it felt like we had walked into history and were part of making history ourselves, as we saw debates in both the House of Commons and House of Lords. We went to Westminster Hall and stood where Henry VIII hosted feasts and where Queen Elizabeth II lay in state.
It was definitely a day that won’t be forgotten anytime soon and has given us the buzz for politics and how we can make a difference in the world. One of the most memorable parts of the day according to the children…… wearing a lanyard that said visitor….. I’m sure it won’t be the lasting memory!
