The Wisdom of Valuing Difference
The week, all classes at Box Primary School have been thinking about what makes us different, and that the things that make us different are the things that make each and every one of us special. That we should celebrate everyone's differences- whether this be race, religion, language or hair colour to name just a few.
We have been reading the book 'It's Okay To Be Different by Todd Parr' as a stimulus for our class discussions and have even had a go at writing a few of our own 'It's OK to's. For example, It's OK to like different flavours of ice cream, It's OK to be different colours, It's OK to have different hair, It's OK to be gay, It's OK to like different things to your friends.
We're thinking of creating our very own book.
Sycamore Class have also been thinking about the power of words: that words have the power to make people feel rotten inside and that saying sorry doesn't take that feeling away. That we should never use words that express negativity about differences- especially if these are about protected characteristics, like gender, race and religion. Instead, our words can be used as a power of good and positivity!
That does sound like a very wise thing to do!
And speaking of wisdom- Chestnut Class treated us to a marvellous assembly on our value of wisdom. Entertaining songs, stories and facts, helped us to increase our own wisdom all round. Thank you so much Chestnut Class!
