Riding High
Published 21/03/25, by Lisa ReedYou may have noticed some extra bikes around school this week. That’s because our Year 6s have been taking part in the Bikeability cycling training programme. Bikeability is a two-day training course which teaches the children how to look after their bike, control their bike and ride safely on the roads.
After learning how to check that both their bikes and their helmet are ready to ride, the Year 6s headed to the playground. Here control of brakes were tested by ensuring they were able to brake in time after the instructor randomly stepped into their path. Next, was a trip to the basketball courts before proving that they were ready to head to the roads.
It was a little unnerving at first, but built up slowly and meaningfully, our children soon felt comfortable riding on the road. They learnt how to be safe: understanding road markings, signalling, knowing how to pass stationary vehicles and learning how to share the road with other vehicles. Of course their ride had to include a ride past of as many of their houses as they could, and a check in on the house of an unwell friend.
The children absolutely loved it and feel empowered with a new skill that will support them for the rest of their lives.
Bikeability wasn’t the only different event happening this week. On Friday, our choir headed to the Mid Somerset Festival to perform and compete. They did incredibly well- performing beautifully- and came back with one of the biggest trophies we've seen! Congratulations choir- you did us very proud!
