With the country’s adults headed to the polling station this Thursday, we created our own polling station at Box Primary School- to demonstrate how democracy works. Our Year 6 children formed four parties: Vision, Transform, Tomorrow and Progress. Each party created their own manifesto, with policies including: support for children’s mental health, ensuring that all vulnerable adults had access to housing, providing aid to ensure that girls around the world have access to schools, charging smokers to use the NHS and creating a waste management booklet for all households to ensure that all were recycling effectively, to name just a few.

The children in KS2 registered to vote last week and received their poll cards early this week; parties had a chance to present their manifesto and canvass throughout the week (some incredibly persuasive pitches delivered in assembly). And then the big day arrived. The Group Room was transformed into a polling station: split into private booths and staffed by non-affiliated Year 6s (all completely fair and legal). The children in KS2 had to come to the polling station ready with their poll cards: no poll card, no vote. The air was abuzz with excitement and solemnity.  

Not wanting to miss out, postal votes were completed by the Year 6s on a secondary school transition day.

Now, all of the votes are in, have been counted and winners are………………………………………….. to be announced in Monday assembly! Look out for our new reigning school prime minister then! Let’s hope they keep their manifesto promises!
